In this issue: Heat Illness Skit • Zika Virus Info • Tick-Borne Illness • Tips for Safe Drinking
Heat Illness Skit: With the heat index climbing this summer, outreach workers have the important job of reminding farmworkers about the dangers of heat-related illness and precautions to take to prevent it. Attached to this email newsletter is a Spanish-language script for a short, entertaining and memorable skit about heat by the staff at the Pender County Farmworker Health program. You can modify the script to be relevant to the crops in your area, and involve farmworkers, staff, students and volunteers in acting out the roles.
Zika Virus Brochure: The CDC has several flyers about Zika available for download in Spanish and English. Click here for a basic information sheet on “what it is and how to prevent it.” The CDC materials are text-heavy, so for more graphic materials check out this flyer about prevention from the PanAmerican Health Organization (PAHO).
Tick-Borne Illness Folletos: Did you know that there are 5 different types of ticks in North Carolina that can transmit infections? The Tick-Borne Infections Council of NC has recently printed many copies of an educational brochure with text and pictures; the Spanish language version is attached to the email for download. To receive hard copies of the brochures, contact Joanie Alexander at 941-365-8417 or info@tic-nc.org
Safe Drinking Habits: In line with the health education principle of “risk reduction” instead of “risk elimination,” it can be helpful to provide farmworkers with tips on how to drink alcohol safely rather than to focus on not drinking at all. NCFHP summer intern Grant O’Brien translated a handout from English to Spanish called “Estrategias para reducir el consumo del alcohol”; see the attached pdf.
