Wake County Sees Record Number of Syphilis Cases in 2015

Wake County is reaching new heights in the health field, and not in a good way.

Wake in 2015 set a new record high for syphilis rates and cases, according to the county’s Health Services Department, which recently released its annual report on communicable diseases. 2015 was the last year available.

Wake documented 245 cases of syphilis then, just one year after recording a high of 178 cases in 2014. Rates of syphilis and other STDs are on the rise nationwide. Experts say it’s partially because of a rise in Internet dating and heroin use, said Sue Lynn Ledford, director of Wake’s public health department.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that can initially cause sores, then pose life-threatening problems if left untreated. In 2015, Wake had 24 cases for every 100,000 people, up from a rate of 7.5 in 2011 and 8.5 in 2012.

The number of recorded gonorrhea cases rose to 1,360 in 2015 from 1,265 in 2014. Despite the increase in cases, the gonorrhea rate of 132 cases for every 100,000 remained lower than the rate of 140 in 2012.

Documented chlamydia cases also rose to 4,966 in 2015, up from 4,566 in 2014. While Wake’s number of chlamydia and gonorrhea cases have remained high in recent years, the rates per 100,000 people are significantly lower than other North Carolina counties. Wake’s chlamydia rate was 484 per 100,000. The statewide rate was 577.

Moving Wake County Forward Transit Referendum

9/30/2016

Comments

Dear Community Leaders and Transit Supporters:

We are finally at THE moment to expand and improve transit in Wake County.  The Moving Wake County Forward transit referendum campaign was officially launched last week by our excellent, bi-partisan campaign Co-Chairs Tashni DuBroy, President of Shaw University, John Kane, CEO of Kane Realty, Knightdale Mayor James Roberson, and Morrisville Mayor Mark Stohlman. We are determined to win!  Thank you very much for your tremendous support and commitment to helping us ensure that Wake voters approve the public transportation referendum this election.

Please join us for a special breakfast briefing on the Moving Wake County Forward transit referendum on Wednesday, October 5, 8:30-9:30 a.m. We are inviting key organizations and business and civic leaders like you to get the latest update on the campaign, receive key information from our pollster, and find out how you can help us win this campaign. We would also like to hear from you about your efforts. The meeting will be held at the Raleigh Regional Association of REALTORs at 111 Realtors Way, Cary NC 27513.

We need to educate many voters quickly about the public transportation ballot referendum, and your efforts are vital to our success. We cannot thank you enough for being part of a broad collaborative effort of many organizations, businesses and civic leaders to win the Wake transit referendum.

Please RSVP here to this free event. Contact Karen Rindge, Executive Director of WakeUP, with any questions as she is coordinating daily campaign activities karen@wakeupwakecounty.org, 919-637-4271.

Sincerely,
Sig Hutchinson, Vice-Chair, Wake County Commission
Matt Calabria, Wake County Commission

P.S. Go to www.MovingWakeForward.com to endorse the campaign yourself right now!
