New York, N.Y., June 8, 2016.- The U.S.-Mexico Foundation (USMF) and the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE) through the Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior (IME) are happy to announce the 2016 Delegation of the Dreamers without Borders Program.
Dreamers without Borders reconnects Dreamers of Mexican origin who live in the United States with their country of origin, for the purpose of contributing to their empowerment by promoting a sense of identity and renewed pride in their cultural heritage. The Program also fosters a commitment amongst Dreamers to stay connected with Mexico and to promote greater understanding between their country of origin and the United States.
“We are happy to collaborate, for a second occasion, with the USMF in this unique initiative. The Program is aligned with the SRE’s commitment to support the development of Mexican youth and to connect Mexicans abroad with Mexico”, said Eunice Rendon, IME’s Executive Director. “The 2016 Delegation will provide participants with the opportunity to learn first-hand about Mexico’s current socioeconomic and political context and cultural heritage.”
In July 2015, the USMF and IME took a delegation of 30 young Dreamers to Mexico. For 2016, their plan is to take between 75 and 100 Dreamers from the US to Mexico for a month-long stay from December 7th, 2016 to January 3rd, 2017.
For the 2016 Delegation, the USMF has brought together several organizations to work together in support of Dreamers without Borders. The USMF has cooperated with the States of Guanajuato, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, and Puebla, several US based “Federaciones” and “Clubes de Oriundos” from these Mexican states, as well as with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights in addition to the IME.
“We are proud of the partnerships established for the 2016 delegation because they allow us to offer Dreamers a truly unique agenda filled with memorable activities that will include a stay in Mexico City, and in the capital of their state of origin”, said Rebeca Vargas, USMF’s President & CEO. “Through these delegations, we look to empower young leaders committed to promoting binational understanding and collaboration while continuing to build a network of Mexican Americans connected with their country of origin”, added Rebeca.
Dreamers have until June 24th to apply to participate in the Program. They only need to fill out a form, present an essay or video, and include a letter of recommendation.
