The Star of Hope campaign officially begins on December 9th, with the Tree of Hope (Arbolito de la Esperanza) lighting event. The lighting represents rays of hope for Hispanic/Latino children by initiating the collection of Estrella de la Esperanza (Stars of Hope) donations. The tree lighting of the tree is preceded by a traditional Latin celebration in which the public participates in a pot-luck dinner with Holiday foods from different Latin American countries. Local Latino musicians volunteer their time to play music and help the audience sing along to villancicos and agüinaldos (traditional holiday songs).
In preparation for the Three Kings Day Parade (Desfile del Día de los Reyes) on Saturday, January 7th, 2017, the selection of the Parade Princess and Prince will be made. Those present can make donations and place a star on the tree for the duration of the campaign.
