It has been my honor to serve as VP of ALPES for the past two years.  I've learned and value so much the work you all do in service of our Latinx community in Wake County and beyond.  I look forward to continued collaboration and many more successes as a team of professionals that we all are!

Our 2017-2018 OFFICERS ARE:

PRES:      Carla Mena
VP:           Eva Pinales
SEC:         TBD
Welcome:  Maty Ferrer
Marketing: Luke Keeler
Education: Maria Panesse

Lastly, I invite you, as my last "act", to be part Diamante's "Three Kings Day Parade" in Cary on January 7th.  I need 5 volunteers to help me "walk" with my HC/NCH banner and pass out brochures as the parade meanders through the streets.  In February, I am looking for a commmittee to help organize WOMEN'S HEART HEALTH again. This is something we started two years ago and I'd like to continue.  If you can help with either, let me know via my personal email:  marti.norma@gmail.com.

Hasta pronto,
Norma Marti

Providing Culturally Competent Supervision when Working with Hispanic and Latino Populations Webinar

12/13/2016

Comments

Picture
Professional supervision is defined as the relationship between supervisor and supervisee in which the responsibility and accountability for the development of competence, demeanor, and ethical practice take place.  Because culture incorporates the influences of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, class, and so forth on our thoughts, assumptions, and behaviors, it is possible to conceptualize all supervision as multicultural. The impact of the socio-cultural-political identities of the supervisory triad that includes the client, supervisee, and the supervisor must be considered to deliver culturally competent supervision.

It’s that time again!! Time to help recruit for the next class of CDC’s Public Health Associate Program (PHAP)!

12/8/2016

Picture
The Executive Board along with the leadership of the Public Health Associate Program (PHAP), would like to engage YOU in the 2017 PHAP associate candidate recruitment season! Our Watsonian membership is a group of excellent public health service professionals who know the unique qualities needed to be successful in the work that we do! During this recruitment process, we do not need more applicants (there are well over 1000+ of those), but instead we strive for a higher percentage of candidates who are a perfect fit for PHAP because of the public health service qualities and character they have! We believe YOU can help us identify these candidates!

Who:
Currently, PHAP has more than 375 public health associates fulfilling hands-on workforce needs in public health agencies and organizations across 44 states, 2 US territories, and the District of Columbia.
After completing the program, PHAP graduates will be qualified for jobs with public health agencies and non-governmental public health organizations and will be uniquely prepared to pursue an advanced degree in public health.
What:

PHAP is a competitive two-year training program for early-career public health professionals who are employed by CDC but work directly in state, tribal, local, and U S territorial public health organizations; community-based organizations; public health institutes and associations; academic institutions; and CDC quarantine stations. Associates develop valuable career skills and receive on-the-job training that will allow them to become well-rounded public health professionals.
When:

The 2017 candidate application period for the Public Health Associate Program is open January 3–9, 2017

What can you do to help?:
Here are a few ways in which we encourage you to help us find qualified candidates:

  •         Reach out to recent bachelor’s- and master’s-level graduates who are interested in a career in public health, or health in general, and encourage them to apply. This may include the individuals you are currently mentoring!
  •         Be sure to share the information NOW!! This will allow time in December for potential candidates to update their resumes etc. to prepare for the January 3-9 submission window!
  •         We all graduated from somewhere, right?! Consider contacting your alma maters to help spread the word about PHAP and the application window.
    •    Schools of Public Health, Nursing, and Health Sciences, to name a few…
      •   Most have an Career Coordinator whose contact information can be found on the school website
    •    University Career Resource Centers are often open to receiving the announcement
  •         Do you know anyone who is a professor at a university and would be open to sharing the opportunity with their students? Feel free to forward it along!
  •         What about any public health or health education organizations you are a member of?! Some of these organizations offer their membership access to a job board on which the announcement can be posted.

Where can you refer potential candidates if they have questions about PHAP?:

  •         Attached Fact Sheet: Feel free to share the attached Fact Sheet.
  •         Website:  http://www.cdc.gov/phap/  The website has additional information about the program, the application process, and recruitment materials are also available.
  •         Email the PHAP Program: PHAP@cdc.gov Emails go to PHAP staff who can answer candidate questions.
  •          Call the PHAP Program: 404.498.0030 Calls go to PHAP staff who can answer candidate questions.

Regarding PHAP Host Sites:
  •         Because of the volume of excellent host site applications PHAP receives each year, the PHAP program does not need any additional assistance with host site application recruitment.
  •         If you receive questions from anyone in a leadership role who may be interested in their organization becoming a host site please refer them to the host site website: http://www.cdc.gov/phap/become_hostsite/opportunity.html or they can call or email the PHAP program at 404.498.0030, PHAP@cdc.gov.

Thank you in advance for your help in recruiting another impressive class of associates!
Your efforts are important in contributing to the next generation of public health professionals!

The Star of Hope campaign officially begins on December 9th, with the Tree of Hope (Arbolito de la Esperanza) lighting event. The lighting  represents rays of  hope  for Hispanic/Latino children by initiating the collection of Estrella de la Esperanza (Stars of Hope) donations.  The tree lighting of the tree is preceded by a traditional Latin celebration in which the public participates in a pot-luck  dinner with Holiday foods from different Latin American countries. Local Latino musicians volunteer their time to play music and help the audience sing along to  villancicos and agüinaldos (traditional holiday songs).

In preparation for the Three Kings Day Parade (Desfile del Día de los Reyes) on Saturday, January 7th, 2017, the selection of the Parade Princess and Prince will be made. Those present can make donations and place a star on the tree for the duration of the campaign.
