Moving Wake County Forward Transit Referendum

9/30/2016

Comments

Dear Community Leaders and Transit Supporters:

We are finally at THE moment to expand and improve transit in Wake County.  The Moving Wake County Forward transit referendum campaign was officially launched last week by our excellent, bi-partisan campaign Co-Chairs Tashni DuBroy, President of Shaw University, John Kane, CEO of Kane Realty, Knightdale Mayor James Roberson, and Morrisville Mayor Mark Stohlman. We are determined to win!  Thank you very much for your tremendous support and commitment to helping us ensure that Wake voters approve the public transportation referendum this election.

Please join us for a special breakfast briefing on the Moving Wake County Forward transit referendum on Wednesday, October 5, 8:30-9:30 a.m. We are inviting key organizations and business and civic leaders like you to get the latest update on the campaign, receive key information from our pollster, and find out how you can help us win this campaign. We would also like to hear from you about your efforts. The meeting will be held at the Raleigh Regional Association of REALTORs at 111 Realtors Way, Cary NC 27513.

We need to educate many voters quickly about the public transportation ballot referendum, and your efforts are vital to our success. We cannot thank you enough for being part of a broad collaborative effort of many organizations, businesses and civic leaders to win the Wake transit referendum.

Please RSVP here to this free event. Contact Karen Rindge, Executive Director of WakeUP, with any questions as she is coordinating daily campaign activities karen@wakeupwakecounty.org, 919-637-4271.

Sincerely,
Sig Hutchinson, Vice-Chair, Wake County Commission
Matt Calabria, Wake County Commission

P.S. Go to www.MovingWakeForward.com to endorse the campaign yourself right now!

Be a superstar fundraiser!

Your participation in the Triangle Run/Walk for Autism helps us raise awareness, but the donations are what enable us to provide support and promote opportunities for those affected by autism in your community. Asking friends and family to sponsor you as you run or walk is the easiest way to increase your impact.

Try our easy tips:
1.     Use a fundraising approach that reflects your style, whether it be personal letters, emails, direct asks, Facebook, or telephone calls. You'll do best with one that reflects your personality.
2.     Write a list of potential supporters such as your employer, family, friends, hairstylist, doctor, dentist, real estate agent, sorority/fraternity members, car dealer, clients, colleagues, and neighbors. Check people off as you contact them.
3.     Share with others how their donations will make a difference in the lives of individuals and families affected by autism.
4.     Be sure to include the link to your personal fundraising page as often as possible, to make it easy for people to donate.
5.     Set a fundraising goal and share it. Keep people updated on how close you are to your goal.
6.     Ask for a specific donation level or that people match your donation.
7.     Lead by example. The easiest donation will come from you and will motivate others.

Get creative:
1.     Ask a local restaurant or store to donate a percentage of sales from one night to your team.
2.     Place a jar in a business for people to donate their spare change.
3.     Get creative by holding a garage sale, bake sale, car wash, or chili cook-off.
4.     Find out whether your employer has a matching gifts program. If so, you can easily double your dollars raised.

For more helpful techniques, be sure to check out our Team Captain Handbook.

Thank you for being a part of our biggest fundraisers of the year! Each donation brings us closer to our goals to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by autism.

Three Things for Volunteers this Fall

9/30/2016

Comments

Greetings, Community Leaders,

There are a few things on the service and volunteering horizon that we thought you’d be interested in.  All are great opportunities to engage in your community and participate in the American tradition of citizen service.
Today, Lonnie Ali announced a new initiative, “Ali75” to inspire acts of service in honor of Muhammad Ali on what would have been her late husband’s 75th birthday in January 2017. Through the Ali75 service campaign, individuals are encouraged to engage in service to make our world a better place. To learn about joining this campaign and inspiring others as Muhammad Ali did, check out “Ali in All of Us”.
On September 11, 2016, the nation will remember the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania through service and with poignant memorial services.  Now, almost a generation removed from that tragic day, we continue to shift our focus to spreading the unity and spontaneous goodwill that people from around the world showed in response to those horrendous acts. As part of the Together Tomorrow coalition, we promote service and volunteering that demonstrates what is possible when we work together. To find an opportunity to serve, visit Serve.gov. When sharing your service on social media use #911Day so we can see all of the dedicated service in your communities.
On October 7, 2016, we will celebrate the swearing in of the 1 millionth AmeriCorps member. Since 1994, 1 million individuals have taken the pledge to “get things done” for America.  As we get closer to that date, we will share ways you can show your support for national service and thank the #1of1million who have served their communities and our country through AmeriCorps.
In addition to September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance and honoring the 1 millionth AmeriCorps member, you may be planning to be a mentor or tutor this school year, serve veterans on Veterans Day, serve meals on Thanksgiving, or join in service for the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.  All of these are opportunities to inspire others to service through the Ali75 service campaign. Learn more here.

Sincerely,

Ted Miller
Chief of External Affairs
Corporation for National and Community Service
P.S. – Right now, more than 560 AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers from our agency are helping communities hit by flooding in Louisiana. Please visit VolunteerLouisiana.gov to find ways you can help those affected by this disaster.

Resources and Information about Heat Illness, Zika Virus and More!

9/30/2016

RECURSOS/RESOURCES
for Health Education and Training
Recommended by the NC Farmworker Health Program
July 19, 2016

In this issue:  Heat Illness Skit • Zika Virus Info • Tick-Borne Illness • Tips for Safe Drinking

Heat Illness Skit: With the heat index climbing this summer, outreach workers have the important job of reminding farmworkers about the dangers of heat-related illness and precautions to take to prevent it. Attached to this email newsletter is a Spanish-language script for a short, entertaining and memorable skit about heat by the staff at the Pender County Farmworker Health program. You can modify the script to be relevant to the crops in your area, and involve farmworkers, staff, students and volunteers in acting out the roles.

Zika Virus Brochure: The CDC has several flyers about Zika available for download in Spanish and English. Click here for a basic information sheet on “what it is and how to prevent it.” The CDC materials are text-heavy, so for more graphic materials check out this flyer about prevention from the PanAmerican Health Organization (PAHO).

Tick-Borne Illness Folletos: Did you know that there are 5 different types of ticks in North Carolina that can transmit infections? The Tick-Borne Infections Council of NC has recently printed many copies of an educational brochure with text and pictures; the Spanish language version is attached to the email for download.  To receive hard copies of the brochures, contact Joanie Alexander at 941-365-8417 or info@tic-nc.org

Safe Drinking Habits:  In line with the health education principle of “risk reduction” instead of “risk elimination,” it can be helpful to provide farmworkers with tips on how to drink alcohol safely rather than to focus on not drinking at all. NCFHP summer intern Grant O’Brien translated a handout from English to Spanish called “Estrategias para reducir el consumo del alcohol”; see the attached pdf.
